Catch up week

This past week was about getting caught up. Work, home, Kung Fu. Everything fell a little behind over the previous couple of weeks. Catching up went well and I’m not feeling so stressed anymore. I feel like I have a good rhythm going again, and will carry it forward to this week. I’m looking forward to BTSW and contributing what I can.

Mental Exhaustion

The past week was an exhausting one. 45ish hours worked in 4 days, and another two 9 and 8 hour days. Some work weeks are going to be crazy, and I’m thankful they don’t come along too often.

I think the worst part of the week was the fact that I missed both my Kung Fu classes. This was my first black belt class missed, as I’ve at least been able to attend online if not physically in class. Thursdays IHC class was non mandatory, but still opportunities missed. Attending class is important in many ways, and one of the key factors of being in class for me is the ability to reset. Kung Fu helps to reset my day or week, and grounds me. Without that last week I was certainly more grumpy, and felt over stressed more than usual.

My practice time and numbers also decreased due to the time limitations and exhaustion of the week. The biggest takeaway from this was how my joints ached. My joints didn’t get the usual exercise and loosening up, especially being a little extra stressed. This week is also going to be a very busy one, but I was already able to do more in the day today than in 4 days last week. And I’m already feeling better for it.

The Big Rethink

I didn’t want to steal the title, and wasn’t quite sure how to explain our class on Thursday, so the ‘big rethink’ is what I came up with. I am referring of course to ‘project 18’ as it has since been named.

It was such a gem of a class as we dove into what I’ll call the internal (mental) instead of a typical external (physical) class. As we all think of things in a different way, and all have different opinions off how we internalize/externalize techniques and movements, it was great to discuss and hear what everyone’s thoughts were.

Every class and all of our training is meant for us to be aware of where we are and what we are doing, and doing something like this gave a different light to that. All classes and training practice have internal and external exercises, and we were able to vocalize them with the group which proved to be very interesting. This has given me a lot to think about, and like Sihing said much more to delve into. So thank you Sihing Burke for including and inviting us into such a great idea!

Pushing On

This last week brought some progress with my forms. I still struggle with swelling and soreness, but recovery seems to be coming quicker. Class last week was difficult, but I pushed through and as always, am glad I did. If I don’t push myself, I won’t know my limits. If I don’t know my limits, I won’t improve.

When I am working repeatedly on certain moves or transitions in forms, I find this the most difficult. When I run through an entire form, there are uncomfortable techniques, but I can push through. I’m finding my limits with repetition, and I believe this is a good way to rebuild the muscles. I’m also getting to know the pain better and when something is too much. I’ll take this as progress.

I was a little surprised when it was so hot, as I swelled quite a lot just from the heat. I was concerned that maybe something was wrong, but then in speaking with others healing from injury or surgery, I wasn’t alone in this. As the weather cooled down some, the swelling lessened. I hadn’t been icing much in the last couple of months, but have started to again after more difficult classes, or lots of repetition. All in all coming along nicely, and learning to be patient.
